Absorbable Tacks print

Over the past few years, bioabsorbable (self dissolving) meniscal tacks have come into use, allowing arthroscopic repair of certain types of torn meniscus(link back to meniscus). These tacks allow surgery to be performed more easily, requiring less anesthesia time, and saving the patient an additional incision. Dr. Halbrecht is one of several clinical investigators in the United States selected to use an even newer and more advanced method of repair for the torn meniscus. This new method employs a spring loaded cannulated absorbable tack allowing even more accurate and controlled repair. The tacks are self dissolving and disappear from the body once healing has occurred.

Results using this technique were recently reported at the Arthroscopy Association of North America Meeting 2003 showing excellent results.
